What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a federally mandated medical examination required for all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. It must be performed by an FMCSA-registered Medical Examiner listed on the National Registry.

Upon passing, you will receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate valid for up to 24 months.

Who Needs a DOT Physical?

You are required to have a DOT physical if you operate any of the following:

  • A vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,001 lbs

  • A vehicle designed to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver)

  • A vehicle transporting hazardous materials requiring placards

  • A Class A or Class B CDL vehicle

This includes truck drivers, bus drivers, delivery drivers (large vehicles), tow truck operators, and construction vehicle operators.

What Does the DOT Physical Include?

The examination covers:

  • Complete medical history review

  • Vision screening (must meet 20/40 in each eye with or without correction)

  • Hearing test

  • Blood pressure and pulse rate measurement

  • Urinalysis (checking for underlying conditions)

  • Physical examination of the spine, neurological function, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, and musculoskeletal system

  • Completion of the FMCSA Federal Medical Examination Report (MCSA-5875)

  • Issuance of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MCSA-5876) upon passing
